The Silent Barn is back and open for business! Well, okay, the Silent Barn has been back and open for business since the beginning of this year, and damn, they have been busy. With shows bangin’ almost every night, art installations gettin’ installed, and their barber shop choppin’ locks on the regular, you can hardly say that the folks behind the Silent Barn haven’t been on the grind. But something’s been missing. And that thing is booze. But after a long wait that has effectively served as a true testament to the ecstatic suspense that bureaucracy can sometimes bring us, the Silent Barn has finally received their beer and wine license, and they’re ready to celebrate. Help get girls on bikes and win yourself fabulous prizes

They bike. Do you? Via Facebook.

Riding a bike in the city can be a dangerous and frustrating proposition, so it’s good when you have a support system. If that support system can also throw great bike-themed parties and give away kick-ass prizes, then all the better. To that end, WE Bike NYC, a riding group looking to get more women on bikes (and as far away from this dude as possible), is throwing a fundraiser party tomorrow (October 10) with the aforementioned kick-ass prizes, at the Grand Victory in Williamsburg. The thrifty bridesmaid’s survival guide

by | 4.25.11 | 6 Comments

Congratulations! Your sister, a close friend or that distant cousin you rarely talk to is engaged and you’ve been asked to put on a dress of her choice, arrange brunches, walk down the aisle with a guy you hardly know, and raise a glass on the big day. In other words, you’re a bridesmaid! No matter how excited you are for the happy couple it’s no secret that being in a wedding requires a lot of time and cash. Even if your best bud is no “bridezilla” (and we have our fingers crossed that she’s not), some costs are unavoidable. (more…)

Where to throw a dance party in Brooklyn for under $300?

A Target Fisrt Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum?

A Target First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum?

Every now and again, we’re asked to pool our collective BK wisdom and help out a Brokelynite in need. Brokelyn fan Warren wrote us this week asking where to throw a birthday party on the cheap. His requirements: a dance floor and room enough for 25 to 30 people. So far, Warren’s been quoted $300 or more everywhere he looks, so that’s the number to beat. Our thought? Go with the flow, and bring the gang to a free DJ’d event at a big space: DJ Lady Bird‘s playing The Bell House front lounge next Thurs. Where else for Warren’s bash?

What’s your pick for Bklyn’s best?

by | 5.12.10 | 37 Comments

raffleThat’s right, we’re holding a raffle, and it’s going to be the best one Brooklyn has even seen. Why? A year ago this month, Brokelyn emerged from its primordial blog ooze and started bringing you all you need for living big on small change, and received some mighty fine accolades along the way). To celebrate our first year, we’re all going to live even bigger, just for one special night before the carriage turns back into the G train. On June 10, we’re having a party at Night Owl in Williamsburg — and we’re going to raffle off the best that Brooklyn has to offer. (more…)

Calling all single Brokelynites—we want to hook you up! We proudly present the BK Meatup (meat market + meetup) that we’re co-sponsoring on Wednesday Sept. 30 along with our fave digisphere partners: FuckedinParkSlope (FiPS) and Brooklyn Based.

So why a singles party? It all started when commenters wrote to FIPS about how hard it was to hook up with other single people in Strolleropolis and thus a meatup was born. Read FIPS for the whole story but here’s the quick version of what you can expect on Wednesday, September 30 at The Bell House, from 7 to 11. (more…)
