In his first 100 days in office, FDR did… a lot, too much to list here. Now we have a president who isn’t just trying to dismantle what’s left of the New Deal, but is also doing a pretty bad job of implementing his evil agenda. Although the latter is comforting, let’s not forget that Trump has already threatened to bomb North Korea, actually bombed Syria and Afghanistan, expanded ICE’s deportation priorities to include more immigrants than before, declared a new war on drugs, tried to ban Muslims from entering the country twice, and tried to take away healthcare from millions of Americans. Oh, and he golfs a lot.
That said, there are ways to resist. Hell, you’ve already done it for 100 days! Read all about it: (more…)
Earth Day is this weekend, which is a great opportunity to remember that the President and his allies either think that climate change is a Chinese hoax or are too concerned with generating profit for massive corporations to care that we’ll all be wearing full-body heat repellant suits and /or living in underwater communes soon if they don’t do something about it. This week brings the Climate March, small, local meetings, a few sign-making events, and plenty of ways to make the world a better place. (more…)

Never underestimate the allure of cheap tattoos in Brooklyn, especially when those tattoos are killer feminist designs that benefit Planned Parenthood. Dozens of eager tattoo subjects lined up outside Magick City in Greenpoint yesterday for the Tattoo to Protect Your Parts fundraiser yesterday. The event didn’t start until 2pm, but if you weren’t in line by noon, you were out of luck. About 80 people total got the chance to pay $40 for a tattoo, with all proceeds going to Planned Parenthood NYC Votes. The event was the brainchild of Party to Protect, a group founded in the post-election malaise to help raise money for things under attack during the Trump administration like reproductive rights and basic human decency.
“I think we’ve all spent a few nights just on the couch with a blanket just crying about the state of the world,” Laura Matthei, one of the group’s organizers told us. “This is obviously something that’s not a conspiracy theory anymore. The framework is being laid out. I thought we were immune to stuff like that and we’re no longer immune. And that’s really terrifying and we want to do everything we can to combat this.” (more…)
Cher gets it; Trump does not. Photo by Gaby Del Valle/Brokelyn.
If Trump’s electoral win and the Patriots’ somehow Super Bowl victory can teach us anything, it’s that sometimes the bad guys come out on top–but only temporarily. Two weeks have passed since the inauguration, but the constant barrage of covertly racist executive orders, extrajudicial decisions and bad tweets means the #resistance is alive and well. Here’s our latest roundup of anti-Trump events and rallies happening this week—plus plenty of parties, fundraisers, and other opportunities to let off some steam. We’ll keep updating as more come in. (UPDATED 2/3 with final flash sheet above.) Among less positive developments, the first month of 2017 has seen some of the most creative Planned Parenthood benefits of all time, and now a discounted female-empowerment tattoo pop-up salon is joining that list.
The event, Tattoo to Protect Your Parts: A Planned Parenthood Affair, is happening Feb. 8 at Greenpoint’s Magick City. It’s a combination tattoo pop-up and dance party, where you can choose from $40 flash sheet tattoos, all designed with a feminist aesthetic by artists at Williamsburg’s Magic Cobra Tattoo Society, with all the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. Offered on a first-come, first-served basis; you can see some of the designs above and the flash sheet’s final 20 designs will be posted on the Party to Protect Facebook page prior to the event.
