When you combine the eternal draw of cheap tattoos and the current need to be active somehow, anyhow, in resisting the current presidential administration, the resulting party is bound to be popular. Party to Protect does just this, and on Tuesday the group held their second event since the inauguration, offering discount flash sheet tattoos for which all proceeds were donated to Earthjustice.
The $60 cash-only black ink tats were done all day by four artists from Williamsburg’s Magic Cobra Tattoo Society. Afterwards, there was a party next door. We got a chance to talk to a few attendees about how they felt about the event, about Trump, and their tattoo of choice. Here’s what they had to say. (more…)
Following the great success of their last benefit discount tattoo event, Party to Protect is back with another day of cheap tats and performances in the name of benefiting a cause the Trump administration is opposed to: The well-being of the Earth.
Tattoo to Protect the Planet for Earthjustice will set up its pop-up salon at the same venue as last time, Greenpoint’s Magick City at 37 Box St., with $60 black ink only flash sheet tattoos available from noon to 6pm privy four artists from Williamsburg’s Magic Cobra Tattoo Society on Tuesday, April 25. All proceeds will go to Earthjustice, a nonprofit organization devoted to representing environmental cases pro bono, “because the Earth needs a good lawyer.” (more…)

Never underestimate the allure of cheap tattoos in Brooklyn, especially when those tattoos are killer feminist designs that benefit Planned Parenthood. Dozens of eager tattoo subjects lined up outside Magick City in Greenpoint yesterday for the Tattoo to Protect Your Parts fundraiser yesterday. The event didn’t start until 2pm, but if you weren’t in line by noon, you were out of luck. About 80 people total got the chance to pay $40 for a tattoo, with all proceeds going to Planned Parenthood NYC Votes. The event was the brainchild of Party to Protect, a group founded in the post-election malaise to help raise money for things under attack during the Trump administration like reproductive rights and basic human decency.
“I think we’ve all spent a few nights just on the couch with a blanket just crying about the state of the world,” Laura Matthei, one of the group’s organizers told us. “This is obviously something that’s not a conspiracy theory anymore. The framework is being laid out. I thought we were immune to stuff like that and we’re no longer immune. And that’s really terrifying and we want to do everything we can to combat this.” (more…)

(UPDATED 2/3 with final flash sheet above.) Among less positive developments, the first month of 2017 has seen some of the most creative Planned Parenthood benefits of all time, and now a discounted female-empowerment tattoo pop-up salon is joining that list.
The event, Tattoo to Protect Your Parts: A Planned Parenthood Affair, is happening Feb. 8 at Greenpoint’s Magick City. It’s a combination tattoo pop-up and dance party, where you can choose from $40 flash sheet tattoos, all designed with a feminist aesthetic by artists at Williamsburg’s Magic Cobra Tattoo Society, with all the proceeds going to Planned Parenthood. Offered on a first-come, first-served basis; you can see some of the designs above and the flash sheet’s final 20 designs will be posted on the Party to Protect Facebook page prior to the event. The dead of winter isn’t exactly a time when you’re looking to take your shirt off in public, but that’s all the more reason to get in on everyone’s favorite deal: Friday the 13th tattoos.
Yep, the best sale in Brooklyn is back, and covering up your ink now means it’s far less likely to peel and scab in the hot sun as it heals. By the time you unveil it to friends during beach season it’ll be as black as the heart of our presidential administration!
Also, not to alarm you or anything, but there are only two Fridays that are also the 13th in 2017. Will you even be alive by the second one? Who knows! Hashtag Trump’s America. Hashtag ink again. So go to any of these fine tattoo parlors to get yourself some ink for $13 plus a lucky $7 tip (unless otherwise noted). (more…)

Don’t look now, but Friday the 13th is fast approaching once again. Some folks may like to mark the occasion by sitting back and watching Jason Takes Manhattan for the umpteenth time, while others might dive under their beds at midnight, crippled with fear for the ensuing 24 hours. For those of us who are not stricken with triskaidekaphobia, and are not crazy about the eighth, not-very-good installment of an 80s horror franchise, how’s about a sweet tattoo deal? If you’ve finally decided to get that flaming bag of poop, UFO, or shattered mirror, but were waiting for the price to be just right, check out these eight spots for $13 Friday the 13th tattoo specials. This will be the very last Friday the 13th of 2014, so why risk living out the next several months in regret? (more…)
