Black Hollies, Friday night at Bruar Falls

Bruar Falls, BK Bowl and Zebulon are the spots for indie galore, a music video film fest + band battle and a vinyl love affair. Or, if you’re staying south(ish), Roots Café will provide the free PBR and tunes to match the café’s Southern vibe. All free or $5, as usual.

Music for Misers, Oct. 25-28: Lobisomem, Strange Boys, more

Lobisomem, Thursday at Zebulon

So, CMJ’s gone, but that just means back to ever-free-and-cheap business as usual. This week, get horny with Superhuman Happiness at Coco 66. In the mood instead for speedy strumming on the upright bass and falsetto singing? Nat Baldwin will satisfy. Otherwise, Dirty Excuse’s gritty female vocals will likely make your nose bleed, and Lobisomem will penetrate the insides of your soul with his eclectic electronica. (more…)

The ultimate badgeless CMJ guide

Yo La Tengo, free Tuesday night at Brooklyn Bowl

Each year around this time, the folks at the College Music Journal host an enormous film, art and music marathon that takes over venues in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. You may know the thing as CMJ: five days of music and shows, drinks and swag, all-nighters with like-minded fans… it’s awesome in almost every way. Except, to do it right, you need a badge—a $100 to $500 free pass that gets you into venue after venue all day and night, for the better part of a week. Sure, you can buy a ticket to this, a ticket to that and get a slice. But if you want to take it all in and you don’t have the hundreds to drop, you’re basically sh*t out of luck and already hoping for next year. Or… you could just read on. Because CMJ is, in fact, chock-full of very free great stuff happening ALL WEEK LONG. You just have to know where to look. (more…)

Music for Misers, Oct. 13-15: Chicha Libre, Kordan, more

by | 10.13.10 | 0 Comments

Chicha Libre, Oct. 14 at Zebulon

Wednesday, disassociate with the ethereal sounds of ZAZA at Bruar Falls. Or if you like being good at your job, then maybe you’ll like Diane Cluck at Zebulon. The Zebulon party continues with Thursday’s record release party for Chica Libre’s second volume of trancy, upbeat Amazonian cumbias, and then there’s the up-and-coming stardom of Caitlin Cannon and the Artillery. An indie showcase and love revival revolution at Brooklyn Bowl might be worth the trip too. (more…)

Brooklyn Bowl’s local showcase is back with more free music, workshops, cheap booze and even a bonus charity element. Local X Local returns Sunday, Sept. 19, with headliner Maluca, a rising star described as “tropical punk” on Diplo’s Mad Decent label and, of course, a NY-native. But get there early because the charity event for the Blue Ribbon MS Charity Bike Benefit runs from noon to 5 p.m., featuring helmet fittings, safety instructions and tire-changing workshops. And from 7 to 11 p.m., there’s free chips and salsa from The Brooklyn Salsa Company, $4 Brooklyn lagers and a special menu item made with fresh produce grown down the street at the Eagle Street Rooftop Farm. Donations are accepted but entry is free.

Video Daughters,

Video Daughters,Wednesday at The Glasslands

Although it’s a short Labor-Day week, there’s no lack of boogey-inducing music to get you through to the next days off. Happy Birthday is rolling through with a free show tonight at Brooklyn Bowl. Think Beach Boys meet the Dirty Projectors. Then The Glasslands has got a pretty mean Wednesday night line-up with, among others, the ever-jovial Video Daughters (no one sings the Tri-State Area blues like they do). You know the deal, nothing’s more than $5. (more…)

The Pioneers of Seduction, Aug. 31 at Bruar Falls

The Pioneers of Seduction, Aug. 31 at Bruar Falls

Not the most hopping week ever for cheap music in the BK atmosphere, but there’s still plenty to keep your attention. Definitely head out to tonight’s open jam session (Aug. 30) at the Slope’s Puppets Jazz Club. We hear it’s facing some hard times and could use the support. What else? Go ahead and wake up beautiful with the Pioneers of Seduction, or get into some do-it-yourself, home-studio-sound head sway with Family Lumber. (more…)

In case the recent saga of the Pool Parties doused your faith a bit in the music gratis, it’s time to get back on track (they did). This week, wile out to free psychedelic riffs by Dinowalrus at Bruar Falls or get freaky with some fresh tunage by The Press at The Woods. As usual, nothing tops $5.

Ted Leo at BK Bowl, and you too? via Impose Magazine

Ted Leo's gone but your summer can live on. via Impose Magazine

If you’re anything like the staff at Brokelyn, you’ve spent the summer tweeting excitedly about all the free music around town.  We’ve been getting down @ the Jelly parties on the waterfront, but we always find ourselves opening our wallets again for music more and more as the autumn air rolls in.

Well, friends, it seems that free food isn’t the only thing you can get out of Twitter: Brooklyn Bowl is offering you a chance to keep that summer concert vibe alive and win passes to an entire year of concerts. (more…)
