Get drunk with the bloggerati at our meetup

bloggeratti

You blog. You drink. So do we! We should do something sometime.

Have you ever done a Google search for the term “Brooklyn blogs?” It turns up a modest 26 million results. That means roughly 10 blogs per resident of our fair borough, which, to be honest, doesn’t sound too far from the truth (this humble reporter is guilty of contributing to at least four himself).

So what? Maybe we do have the highest concentration of bloggers on the planet. But don’t you ever wonder what the faces of those pajama-clad carpal tunnel-rocked wretches of the Brooklyn bloggerati look like? Now’s your chance to find out, and, like, get drunk with us and stuff. (more…)

Tell us your budget wedding tips, part II

by | 1.11.10 | 7 Comments

winners engagement photoThis is Kristen and her fiancé, Wes, the beaming winners of our wedding ticket give-away to last Saturday’s Brooklyn Based wedding fair at the Bell House (which we heard was big fun). To win tickets, we asked readers to submit their best ideas for saving money at their wedding, and Kristin had a bunch:

“Think of all of your friends and friends of friends and see who might be willing/able to pitch in. My best friend does a baking blog, and she’s making my wedding cake. Another friend has a restored classic Mustang, so he’s providing the getaway car. Yet another works at a brewery, and he was able to give us an awesome deal on alcohol.  Cashing in on relationships—without taking advantage—is a great way to save money while making the wedding unique at the same time. “

Yep, ya gotta have friends, and ones with restored classic Mustangs are the best kind. But Kristen isn’t the only Brokelyn bride-to-be with some cheap tricks up her sleeve. (more…)

Brokelyn makes the Park Slope 100 list

by | 12.22.09 | 0 Comments

Picture 25What do Jonathan Ames, Maggie Gyllenhaal, that redhead waitress at Mary’s Fish Camp and yours truly have in common? We all made this year’s Park Slope 100 list, the annual tally of “100 people, places and things that make Park Slope Park Slope,” compiled by Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn author Louise Crawford. Brokelyn earned a spot for being “the right blog at the right time and for teaching us to live big on small change” and we’re thrilled to be among the delightfully random honorees including Babeland, the neon sign at Rachel’s Taqueria, Iris in the radiation department at Methodist, Prospect Park West (the novel by Amy Sohn, a bit of a surprise here) and our fellow bloggers at Brooklyn Based and FIPS, among 93 others. We’d be remiss in not giving big props to Louise herself, one of the first and most prolific Brooklyn neighborhood bloggers, who covers her territory like a Maclaren rain shield. Thanks Louise!

A new BK Meatup to cure the holiday blues

Find your very own Santa at the BK Holiday Meatup

Holidays. Nog with two straws. People skating hand-in-hand. Sickeningly cute couples huddled for warmth behind a frosted coffee shop window. It’s all enough happy winter romantic goo to make you want to vomit. And you know damn well you want to be a part of it. Unfortunately, December is a notoriously crappy time to meet new people to date, what with everyone’s attentions all on parties and family and such. But this year, don’t worry, because the BK Meatup is back, and it’s meatier than before. (more…)

Even Santa has to be frugal this year

Even Santa has to be frugal this year

With the onset of December comes the full-face rush towards the holidays that even your perpetually sarcastic and snarky bloggers are powerless to resist. So let’s jump right in to the noggy pool and see what’s going on around town, shall we?

Today is the first annual NYC Bloggers Do the Holidays Roundup organized by Manhattan User’s Guide, wherein 13 of the city’s bloghounds across different fields give you a rundown of  holiday happenings, deals, outings, history and music. (But not 14 blogs? It’s fine, whatever, we’re not hurt, we’ll just sit quietly in the corner and keep knitting these dryer-lint mittens.) (more…)

TONIGHT: it’s the great BK Meatup!

Calling all single Brokelynites—we want to hook you up! We proudly present the BK Meatup (meat market + meetup) that we’re co-sponsoring on Wednesday Sept. 30 along with our fave digisphere partners: FuckedinParkSlope (FiPS) and Brooklyn Based.

So why a singles party? It all started when commenters wrote to FIPS about how hard it was to hook up with other single people in Strolleropolis and thus a meatup was born. Read FIPS for the whole story but here’s the quick version of what you can expect on Wednesday, September 30 at The Bell House, from 7 to 11. (more…)
