Date night on a budget: A comprehensive list of Brooklyn's best BYOB restaurants

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could go out to dinner and be certain that your favorite alcoholic beverages were available, for around $3 per drink? Have we got news for you: Brooklyn has some awesome BYOB restaurants, so going out to eat and drinking cheap doesn’t have to exist only in your dreams.

A BYOB restaurant is a beautiful, cost-effective option often overlooked in a city where you’re constantly stuck $12 for something you already have in your fridge and could’ve poured into your own mason jar. We’re obviously not taking any kind of anti-bar stance here, but if you have a few odd beers at your apartment and want to get rid of them, why not take them out for a night on the town at at one of Brooklyn’s best BYOB restaurants? Gone are the days of abandoned warehouses and empty piers lining the Brooklyn waterfront. Wegman’s has replaced the ghostly buildings on Admiral’s Row in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and it’s hard to imagine Red Hook without Ikea. Beautification efforts in the early 2000s replaced miles of industrial sites with the Brooklyn Bridge Park and rejuvenated the waterfront as a popular space for cultural events. Now with businesses like the Brooklyn Barge Bar which offers a range of water sport programs nestled comfortably next to art galleries and restaurants, Brooklyn’s shoreline has become a playground for nature enthusiasts and urbanites alike. Here’s our recommendations of the 50 best ways to experience Brooklyn’s waterfront. Welcome to beach season. Depending on the kind of person you are, you might have different preferences for your beach, like the food you can get nearby or the crowd you want to hang around with or even your preferred way of getting to there. Instead of thinking long and hard about it, our top Beach Data Scientists put together a quiz that determines which NYC beach is the one that fits your personality the best. So take it and enjoy, but just remember that the results are legally binding* and you have to go to this beach for the rest of the summer! (more…)

We had a nice run, right? We saw week after week of decently cheap real estate. That was probably our first mistake: we were getting too comfortable. So this week brought the jaded blush back to our cheeks, as rent seems to have gone way back up. Maybe start signing away your organs; you don’t need that extra kidney, anyway. Our apartments this go-round are in Bed-Stuy, Bay Ridge, Brighton Beach, Bushwick, Crown Heights and Flatbush. Lots to choose from, so that’s nice. (more…)

Now that the summer is here and you have to factor things like outdoor drinking, beach trips and sunscreen into your budget, you might be thinking that going out to eat might have to fall by the wayside. No sense in worrying about that next week though, because the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce wants everyone to go check out the borough’s huge selection of Russian and Eastern European restaurants, so they’ve established Brooklyn’s first Russian Restaurant Week. That means even you, the humble brokester, can spend a week eating out, since participating restaurants are offering prix fixes and discounts on your meal. (more…)

If you can get a seat at Pok Pok, you can experience one of New York’s best cheap eats. via Facebook

As befitting Brooklyn’s reputation as a place for good food (for everyone but Vogue anyway), it’s been popping up in “Best Of NYC” food lists like New York Magazine‘s Best Cheap Eats more and more. After having 15 and then 18 spots the last couple years though, Brooklyn had 31 of the 100 Best Cheap Eats this year, with restaurants spanning from Brighton Beach to Greenpoint. While on the one hand this could mean longer waits at your favorite spots, on the other hand, more places on this list means a bigger cut of appropriations from the City Council. Or at least that’s how we understand it. So there’s that. (more…)

Next week is the first anniversary of Sandy making landfall and wreaking havoc on New York City. As people look back, there’s going to be a lot of noise, which is nice since there’s still work to be done rebuilding. But a moment of quiet could be nice to, and to that end, some Brooklynites have organized a number of candlelight vigils to be held in waterfront neighborhoods on October 29. (more…)

Summer is slowly leaking away, and oh wow, you haven’t even taken a vacation yet! What do you work for, if not to take time away from your job in a fancy fashion. Of course, you don’t have a car and you don’t want to drop $300 on airfare so… Wait! You live in Brooklyn, a place people come when they’re on vacation. So why don’t you just pretend you’re one of them, and go on vacation without really going anywhere? (more…)

Going to the beach is awesome, but if there’s any downside (and it’s really barely a downside), it’s that there’s nowhere to charge your phone. Given that everyone uses phones as watches nowadays, you do need to know what time it is when you have to go catch the NYC Beach Bus back from Jacob Riis Park. Fortunately, AT&T is stepping in to provide us with free solar-powered phone chargers at beaches around the city, starting tomorrow. But don’t use it as an excuse to play Candy Crush at the beach all day. (more…)
