If there’s anything that celebrates the ascendant victory of the Nerd Class — those who weren’t invited to the parties where you Actually Might Have Tried Alcohol Before Age 19, or otherwise shunned for trying to make the most of your education — it’s Brooklyn’s own Secret Science Club. The Club at The Bell House is like having a black hole hover over your high school, suck out all the droning teachers and thickheaded jocks and then spew out kooky, slightly tipsy teachers and a fascinating curriculum from the Learning is Fun Dimension. And now, it needs your help! The Club is usually FREE so it started a Kickstarter to expand its fifth season with more scientists (like Neil deGrasse Tyson), new projects and bigger audiences. Seeing a huge room packed for a science lecture on a random Wednesday night means we must be doing something right in Brooklyn. (more…)
Compete for cash money at the skint’s talent show!

Just because you’re feeling dragged down by these dog day doldrums doesn’t mean you can’t still get yourself some free education — it’s almost like being in school, except there’s a ton of booze involved! Tonight, 61 Local kicks off its new event series with a free discussion on “Food Justice and Why It’s Important to Choose Local” to discuss the hows and whys of a locavore diet. On Wednesday, Secret Science Club (shh!) returns to the Bell House with a viewing of the documentary “Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives” plus all the associated science-freaky music, drink specials and surprises the club brings along. Get schooled in the music/famous child industry by Roseanne Cash, who celebrates her new book release at Powerhouse Books on Thursday. 6 reasons to be at tonight’s BK Blogs meetup
The internet, for all its wonders, has made us anti-social beings, confined to bedrooms in underwear (or jorts – Ed.) to scavenge and disseminate information, inside of submerging ourselves in the tangible world. It’s not a bad thing, of course – we can report, write and publish worldwide for barely a fraction of the cost or time — but it does mean we can feel a little cooped up. The solution: tonight’s Brooklyn Blogger meetup at the Bell House, a chance to meet your fellow bloggeratti, swap tips and business cards and plot a blogtopia future. Team Brokelyn will be there, so will our friends from FiPS, Brooklyn Based and the skint. In case you need some convincing, here are six reasons why you should come too. (more…)
Will blog for food? A fest for you this week
Next week is the informal, booze-centric Brooklyn blogger meetup co-hosted by us, the skint, Brooklyn Based and Fucked in Park Slope, but if you can’t wait that long to mix and mingle with your favorite bloghounds, you can check out the sixth annual Brooklyn Blogfest at the Bell House this Thursday. Last year’s fest, you may remember, faced criticism and charges of selling out for a sponsorship from Absolut and letting keynote speaker Spike Lee shill the vodka instead of riffing on the changing borough. But this year they’ve gone back to their roots with keynote speaker Jeff Jarvis, who blogs on media issues at BuzzMachine and wrote the book What Would Google Do?. Jarvis’ presentation is something that grabs all our interest: “Will Blog for Food (or You Can Make Money Doing This!),” focusing on new business models for bloggers. And more! (more…)

BK bloggers unite May 17 for a good cause!
If you live in Brooklyn and read this site, odds are you have a blog, have dreams of starting one or, at the very least, have a regular rotation of your favorite blogoville residents you check each day to stay informed (or maybe just stay procrastinated). As cut-throat as New York City is, Brooklyn bloggers are an intensely supportive and friendly bunch; now we’re coming again together for one of our favorite causes — drinking, mingling, seeing your face — and an actual cause: helping a Bay Ridge family facing a double-dose of aggressive cancer. Join us as we form a superfecta with our friends (and kick-ass blogs) Fucked in Park Slope, the skint and Brooklyn Based May 17 for the 2011 Brooklyn Blogger Meetup at the Bell House! Details below: (more…)
