Sure you get off of work for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and alternate side parking is suspended, but there are way better ways to honor the legacy of America’s most famous Civil Rights leader in Brooklyn than by sleeping late and not having to move your car for a few hours. All weekend long and into Monday, you can freely (like actually for free) participate in several Brooklyn-based cultural events that offer tribute to the man who committed his life to peace, freedom and justice for all — or find a local volunteer opportunity to follow your own call to service.  (more…)

You can be in BAM's social network

We’re big fans of BAM, and the Fort Greene institution’s been pretty good to us too. And now, for the next 10 days or so, they’re running a deal to win over more loyal fans. As part of a membership drive, until Oct. 31, BAM is offering an extra month on all of its year-long BAM Cinema Club memberships. The memberships run from Movie Buff, where you get $5 off every ticket for one person (previously $4 off), to Movie Mogul II, where two people see every movie free (of course, for $700, you have to see A LOT of movies). Whatever you buy, do it in October, and get 13 months for the price of 12. And along with the deal, comes your entrance into BAM’s raffle for a chance at a membership upgrade for a year of free movies. Sixpoint Craft Ales: They'll be there. Will you?

Missed out on getting tickets to Edible magazine’s Good Beer fest? Or maybe it was the $40 price tag. Yipit.com is selling half-price tickets to the sold-out, intimate uber-tasting at BAMcafé tomorrow evening, Jul. 28. The event, hosted by Edible Brooklyn (& Manhattan) and the Good Beer Seal, will include 12 to 15 varieties of beer, many of which you’ve never tasted before, from breweries around New York. And there’ll be food—plenty of it—from Fette Sau, Luke’s Lobster, Sammy’s Roumanian Steak House, Sigmund’s Pretzels and quite a few others. Yes, still $20, but you do the value math for this one. A Target First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum?

Every now and again, we’re asked to pool our collective BK wisdom and help out a Brokelynite in need. Brokelyn fan Warren wrote us this week asking where to throw a birthday party on the cheap. His requirements: a dance floor and room enough for 25 to 30 people. So far, Warren’s been quoted $300 or more everywhere he looks, so that’s the number to beat. Our thought? Go with the flow, and bring the gang to a free DJ’d event at a big space: DJ Lady Bird‘s playing The Bell House front lounge next Thurs. Where else for Warren’s bash?
