Calling all single Brokelynites—we want to hook you up! We proudly present the BK Meatup (meat market + meetup) that we’re co-sponsoring on Wednesday Sept. 30 along with our fave digisphere partners: FuckedinParkSlope (FiPS) and Brooklyn Based.

So why a singles party? It all started when commenters wrote to FIPS about how hard it was to hook up with other single people in Strolleropolis and thus a meatup was born. Read FIPS for the whole story but here’s the quick version of what you can expect on Wednesday, September 30 at The Bell House, from 7 to 11. (more…)

Canned food drive at… Babeland?

It only looks like a baby's bath toy.

It only looks like a baby's bath toy.

We love a good food drive and all but somehow, schlepping a reusable tote full of Goya beans to Babeland seems a little…unsexy, maybe? Isn’t it a place you sort of guiltily duck into with your sweetie after you’ve had a few? Not this weekend: today through Sunday, our friends at Babeland —not that we know them that well—are offering 25 percent off everything in the store to anyone who brings in five or more cans to donate to the Food Bank for New York City. (And no, don’t feel like your good deed is diminished by the fact that all you really wanted was a deal on a Big Daddy Pump.) (more…)

She took out a bag from Cookie’s, the children’s department store on Fulton Street, and proceeded to lay out all the makings of a Catholic school girl’s uniform: knee socks, hair ribbons, a pleated skirt in a girl’s size large.

Her explanation? The guy she was planning on seeing Saturday night had requested this particular getup for their rendezvous. (more…)

Father’s Day gifts for $50 and under

by | 6.15.09 | 2 Comments

fathers-day-sneakersWhy do the items that turn up in gift shops every year around this time have so little to do with any of the men we know? Golf ball this and that, leather desk crap, and the worst: hip flasks. Sorry, but if he’s tucking a nip into his cargo pocket at Prospect Park, he needs an intervention for Father’s Day. So with actual Brooklyn fathers in mind, we made the rounds in a few different neighborhoods. This being Brokelyn, we also had a budget: $50 and under. Our first find: a dress-’em-up-or-down classic every prepster dad should have (if he doesn’t already): Vans boat shoes. $45 at Private Stock, 458 Bergen St. between Flatbush and Fifth Avenue, 718-230-0055, www.privatestockny.com.
