Remember that thing about loving dogs and hating people who mistreat them? And how sometimes, drinking beer can save them? Well, on Friday, July 18, you get another chance to help pups in the pound when the holy trinity of awesomeness – beer, dogs and a bar – band together for a dog fashion show at Freddy’s (627 5th Ave., South Slope).

Freddy’s first annual Doggy Fashion Show (pray there will be more) is being held on Friday to raise money for K9 pals in a no-kill pound in Brooklyn. Sponsored by Freddy’s along with the Park Slope Fifth Ave. BID,  Lagunitas Brewing Company and Smuttynose Brewing Company, this block party bonanza only requires that you dress up your dog (or just come see other people do that), drink some great craft beers and be entertained. Not only will fashion-clad furry friends be fighting for first place, but comedy, live music and circus acts will also be on hand, with comedians Brook Van Popplen and Guilla Rozzi of Dive Comedy fame MC-ing the show, live music of the jug band variety and for good measure, a roaming clown, contortionist and fire performer from the Gowanus Circus. So, basically, this is one of the most outrageous things we’ve ever seen come out of a bar, and you get the added bonus of helping dogs while doing it.

Prizes for first, second and third place will be Petland gift cards for $100, $50 and $25, and free doggy swag like bowls, frisbees and chew toys will be handed out during the block party as well. The show is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm, but start time is subject to change so be sure to check the website or contact Freddy’s (freddys [AT] freddysbar.com) before you drag your dog down Fifth Avenue covered in glitter. The streets will be closed off from 5pm to 9pm, so you and your pup will have plenty of time to wander once you’re there.

Think your dog is diva enough? Email Freddy’s for an application and start practicing your doggy catwalk. Some show tips: work it; accessorize; matching outfits mandatory.
