Feets of kindness: Donate bikes and shoes to help people around the world

Odds are you’ve got a pair or two of neglected kicks collecting dust under your bed or at the bottom of your closet. Why not put them to better use? NYC Urchin (a site for NYC surfers) is partnering with clothing line Loomstate to host a used bike and shoe drive this Sunday at the Brooklyn Flea on the Williamsburg waterfront, with a special bonus for Brokelyn readers who volunteer to help out! Your donation of new or lightly used shoes (and $1 for shipping costs), will help folks in need, especially in disaster relief areas, through Soles 4 Souls.

And if you can spare a used bicycle — in at least repairable condition, with no major missing pieces — Pedals for Progress fixes up and distributes them in developing areas of Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe, where self-powered, reliable transportation is essential for survival. (It costs $40 to get a bike to someone who needs it, so NYC Urchin is asking for a minimum $10 donation with each bike.) And about that special offer:

There’s a deal for Brokelynites: Drive organizers are looking for volunteers. Call Annie at 201-519-0488 or email [email protected], and if you mention Brokelyn, you’ll be entered in a drawing to win an NYC Urchin T-shirt not yet available to the public, a giveaway exclusive to Brokelyn readers!

“I can definitely use some extra hands,” NYC Urchin’s Annie McBride said, “especially at the start of the day — setting up, pitching the canopy, getting some already donated bikes to the location, fliering the area a bit. It’s hard to say exactly how many volunteers I will need, but I’d say at this point the more the merrier.”

There are a bunch of other perks, too: Shoe donors will get a discount at JackRabbit and the chance to win organic cotton beach balls courtesy Loomstate. And bike donors will receive a discount at Sole Bicycle (opening in Brooklyn this month) and will also be entered to win the awesome two-tone Sole bicycle pictured here. And if you’re interested in the Sole bicycle but don’t have a used bike to give away, you’ll nab a chance to win for every $10 you donate to Pedals for Progress through NYC Urchin.

And one more thing: There will be complementary KIND bars for donors and volunteers, too.

Check here for more information on the event. It’s on, rain or shine!
