UNCHARTED: Michael Arthur and Peter Salett

Apr 14, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

| $15
A collaborative evening premiere in music and ink with Uncharted’s in-house artist, Michael Arthur, who specializes in accompanying music with live, improvised ink illustrations, and film composer/singer songwriter Peter Salett.
Complimentary beer and wine is served prior to and during all concerts.

Michael Arthur is a Brooklyn-based artist who specializes in both drawing the intimate moments of theater, dance and music as well as performing “live drawings”, visually accompanying music and performers with projected, real time illustrations. He draws mostly in ink without any pencils or rough drafts: each drawing is a live reaction to the moment. Michael’s drawings have appeared at Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The New Yorker, Departures Magazine, NPR, The Huffington Post and many other places. He is also a member of the indie band Balthrop, Alabama where he draws live during performances.
Peter Salett is in the middle of a multi faceted career – having released seven records on his own labels; film scoring, contributing his own songs to movies as well as writing songs for characters to sing; and also appearing in many films. When Time Out New York called him a “downtown folk legend” he had just turned 30 years old. Peter first song in a studio film was “Heart of Mine” – the main theme and end title song in Edward Norton’s 2000 directorial debut Keeping the Faith, starring Norton, Ben Stiller, and Jenna Elfman. The song was mixed by legendary producer T Bone Burnett and was one of two Salett songs on the Hollywood Records soundtrack that also included Tom Waits and Elliot Smith. Around the same time Peter appeared as Guitar Dude in David Wain’s cult classic film Wet Hot American Summer – which was the beginning of his collection of comedic cameo film performances. After having songs in many movies, and writing songs for movies, the natural progression was for Peter to start scoring films as well – his first notable score was the 2005 David Jacobson film Down in the Valley, starring Edward Norton and Evan Rachel Wood. As a live performer Salett has toured the country and supported great artists including The Swell Season, David Gray, They Might Be Giants, Ron Sexsmith, Patty Griffin, and many more. He has recently finished another record, a 37 minute piece with ocean sounds, orchestral strings, and a song cycle entitled “Suite for the Summer Rain.” Peter is composing music for the modern dance piece “Ripening”, including a recently screened dance movie at Lincoln Center as a part of Dance Camera Now.

Following a triumphant 2015 concert series, Greenwich House Music School is proud to present Uncharted 2016, a concert series featuring high-profile local artists debuting first-time performances of new work or new collaborations. The Uncharted concert season covers a broad selection of performative genres, from jazz to traditional folk, electronic to classical, cabaret to tap dance. Performances for Uncharted will take place every Thursday from March 24 to May 12.

“The Uncharted series was founded as a safe space for artists to take risks,” says series curator Jennie Wasserman, formerly of SFJAZZ, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub and Carnegie Hall. “Last season’s collection of sold-out concerts proved that audiences are always excited to hear something new from their favorite performers. That success has emboldened us to vary our lineup even further. Greenwich Village is one of America’s oldest and most successful social melting pots; reflecting the neighborhood’s artistic excellence and diversity is one of the goals of our programming.”

Performances start at 8:00 p.m. Concerts are staged at Greenwich House Music School under the chandeliers of its Renee Weiler Concert Hall, an intimate 100-capacity room featuring excellent acoustics, a welcoming neighborhood vibe and a pair of Steinway grand pianos. All shows are general admission and open to all ages. Complimentary beer and wine is served prior to and during all concerts.
