TRAVEL BACK IN TIME TO NIBLO’S PLEASURE GARDEN

Jul 12, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

| $35; $30 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund, the Victorian Society New York and the Brooklyn Historical Society
Niblo's Garden

On the evening of Saturday, July 12, Green-Wood will celebrate its “permanent resident” William Niblo (1789–1878), as it recreates a lively night in the premier entertainment venue of the 19th Century, with a one-of-a-kind outdoor show and picnic at the site of Niblo’s grand mausoleum.

Performers will channel the 19th-century flair of Niblo’s theater, including acts by fire jugglers, opera singers, famed knife thrower Throwdini and more, all surrounding a beautiful glacial pond and the stately mausoleum of William Niblo himself. Niblo was famous for bringing guests to his already-constructed mausoleum, where his beloved wife lay in eternal rest, for picnics on the banks of Crescent Water in warmer weather. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, picnic dinners and beverages as they step back in time with Green-Wood and author, historian and Niblo expert Ben Feldman to celebrate this tradition. Ben Feldman’s new book, East in Eden: William Niblo and His Pleasure Garden of Yore, will be available for purchase on-site.

Niblo’s Garden was the Radio City Music Hall of its day. It featured acrobats, vaudeville, dramas, musical concerts, and operas and was the destination for entertainment in New York City. Niblo’s was the site of America’s first piece of musical theatre. The fashionable theatre-garden, located in Manhattan on Broadway between Prince and Crosby seated 3,200 persons. It was demolished in 1895.
