Green-Wood, home to almost 5,000 Civil War veterans, will mark the 150th anniversary of the end of America’s bloodiest war with stories of sacrifice and heroism in a compelling new exhibition running from Saturday, May 23, 2015 through Sunday, July 12, 2015.

To Bid You All Good Bye: Civil War Stories will be on exhibit in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel and will tell the stories of 20 of Green-Wood’s permanent residents who contributed to the war effort. The exhibit will feature photographs, letters, gravestone photographs and photographic portraits, swords, stereo views and other historic objects from Green-Wood’s collections and archives, as well as items borrowed from public and private collections, some of which have never been exhibited before.

Among Green-Wood’s permanent residents featured in the exhibition will be the 12-year-old drummer boy who became Kings County’s first casualty of the Civil War; two brothers, one fighting for the North, the other for the South, who were mortally wounded within feet of each other during one of the last battles of the war; the Quaker who enlisted and whose mother never spoke with him again; the astronomer who became a Union general and founded a village in South Carolina for freed slaves; the Confederate who became the first Civil War general to be killed in battle; the female abolitionist turned nurse; and many more.

To Bid You All Good Bye, designed by Archigrafika, was developed in collaboration with the Brooklyn Historical Society as part of a joint programming initiative to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the war’s end through exhibitions, educational curricula, and public programming.
