These Hands Built: A Musical Performance and Art Installation

Jan 24, 2015 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

| Free

Taking inspiration from 1940s art and culture, the physical workplaces and the stories of the known and unknown African American men and women workers of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, THESE HANDS BUILT aims to recognize and honor the presence of the Black hands that built ships, (re) built bodies, (re) built nations and built foundations for social and political change for future generations within the United States and abroad.

The experimental music group Hot Hands will present a live performance inspired by the histories of former African American workers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Incorporating live instruments, samples and vocals; the ensemble will interpret and transform environmental soundscapes, music from the 1940s, and the words of those who worked in the Yard as an homage to the Brooklyn Navy Yard as both space and historical catalyst.

Performance length approx. 30 mins.

Taking place in the lobby; artwork by Cheyanne Epps and Jose de Jesus Rodriguez. The artwork  will be on display for the entire month of February with additional pieces located at Tipsy, 584 Myrtle Avenue.

These Hands Built is and exhibit within Where I’m From: The Black Artstory of Myrtle and Beyond taking place February 1-28, 2015 along Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. For more information on the month please click here.
