the skint presents: CMJ Music Marathon Opening Night Showcase with In-Flight Safety, New Myths, Burning Palms
Oct 21, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm| $8
Running October 21-25, CMJ’s annual music marathon is a festival of sonic excess, proudly boasting, “80+ venues, 1,300+ artists and 125,000+ fans.” the skint is psyched to be a part of the fun, piling three amazing, diverse bands into an intimate Union Hall show on opening night. But the bands chosen—hailing from Halifax, Tucson and New York—aren’t just contributing to the mania; they all create rich musical environments that’ll create a sonic wave to wash over the start of the near-insurmountable festivities.
Headlining is Halifax, Nova Scotia’s indie music scene favorite In-Flight Safety, who are touring in support of their new album Conversationalist. It’s a catchy indie rock LP with lush guitar and introspective vocals, and the band will be filling Union Hall with its meticulously crafted melodies.
New Myths, hailing from New York City, are fresh off their debut album’s release this week and show no signs of slowing down… In addition to their release show at Cameo tomorrow, they have five CMJ shows lined up… but we’ve got ‘em first! They’re an all-girl trio inspired equally by new wave sounds and tight harmonies that’ll give you goosebumps. Their “False Gold” single has been on the skint’s personal playlist for months.
Burning Palms have been described as “the soundtrack to a cigarette and sex-fueled trip across the Mojave Desert in a 72 Olds Delta 88 with no air conditioning” (TTDPHX). We couldn’t agree more. The band comes from Tucson, Arizona and it shows: Like the desert, Burning Palms can feel expansive and warm, just don’t get too comfortable or you’ll get burned (aka dance).
