The Shitty Pixies, Valley Lodge, Barefoot Walking
Jan 17, 2014 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm| $8-$10
The Shitty Pixies
The Shitty Pixies began organically out of Evan and Ezra’s shared obsession with the Pixies. Lulu from the Vandelles and Jesse from Ponyblood fell in so naturally at the first rehearsal it immediately became clear that we had to make this a regular thing.
Valley Lodge is the rock machine comprised of singer/guitar player, and world-class entertainer Dave Hill (Sons of Elvis, Uptown Sinclair, Cobra Verde); guitar player/singer John Kimbrough (Walt Mink), bass player/singer Phil Costello (Tragedy, Satanicide, Stynx, Children of the Unicorn), and drummer Rob Pfeiffer (Sense Field). They are big in Japan and I’m not even kidding. It sounds like Cheap Trick, T. Rex, Big Star, Raspberries, Matthew Sweet, Slade, the Kinks, and probably a bunch of other stuff too. It’s power pop meets pop rock meets your best friend’s parents going out of town when you are sixteen and think that they won’t notice if you threw a pool party. Oh, and it’s 1978 and you are hooked on glue.
Lead singer Livia Beasley and guitarist Anthony Grillo first made music together in the late ’90s. In 2009, the two friends joined up again as Barefoot Walking. Drummer George Scoufaras and bassist Brian Takacs drive their heavy rhythm section. Fiddle and keyboard player Griffin Sargent deepens the rootsy vibe already present Liv’s classic Americana vocals.
While Livia is a child of the Illinois farm belt, the boys of Barefoot Walking were all born and raised in New York. The sound that emerges seamlessly flows from folk pop and indie funk. City on the outside, country on the inside.
Barefoot Walking is a rootsy, leftfield pop outfit, whose songs have an infectious, dance-funk twist. Barefoot Walking’s material has a deceptively cheerful surface that hides a far darker undercurrent. Let them pull you under.
