The Ladies Mile: Procurement, Promenading & the Peril of Desire
June 22 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm| $35
The Ladies Mile was the district in New York City where the Rich Housewives of the Gilded Age shopped for their Tiffany lamps, Gorham silver, Macy’s rococo furniture, Lord & Taylor clothing and other fine merchandise. It’s actually ground zero of where our modern consumer obsession with shopping began. It was one of the only places where classes mingled in public together and an entire new leisure activity. As the wealthy young housewives were mesmerized by a new world of luxury goods, they had to ask themselves…shall I pay in cash, credit or take the five finger discount? You may be surprised to learn how temptation among the carriage trade was sometimes too great to resist and a society lady might find herself being escorted to the police by a store detective and then diagnosed with kleptomania. Join us for a glass of bubbly as we explore the origins of mass consumerism and a forbidden obsession. Join us for champagne, history & discussion!
