THE JEWISH BOARD’S ANNUAL SPRING “MITZVAH DAY”

On Sunday, May 15, the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (The Jewish Board) hosts its annual spring “Mitzvah Day” of community-wide volunteerism to support New Yorkers living with developmental, intellectual and other challenges. Among the fun volunteer projects for individuals, families, and groups: participating in a basketball tournament in the East Village, helping run an Olympics-style event for kids in Riverdale, creating a vegetable garden on Ward’s Island, and hosting a lively and festive a party (complete with DJ!) in Borough Park. • Advance registration recommended.
• Volunteers will receive a confirmation e-mail with project address, directions/transportation information, and other details.
• Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
ATTIRE: Comfortable, casual clothing that can get dirty.
Manhattan: East Village
Hoops, Hangout and Healthy Snacking, 6:00-8:00PM
Participate in a basketball tournament and cook up healthy snacks with the young men living at The Jewish Board’s Kaplan House.
Pack It Up: Packages for Kids, 1:00-3:00PM
Support literacy and creativity by creating care packages containing books, educational activities, and creative and therapeutic art supplies for children and families who are clients of The Jewish Board’s counseling centers.
Manhattan: Upper East Side
Nature Walk Photo-fest 12:00-2:00PM
Join the men and women living at The Jewish Board’s Abraham III Residence as they photograph nature during a guided walk along the East River. Afterwards, help create a photo montage for display in their common room.
Manhattan: Ward’s Island
Plant a Garden with a View, 1:00-4:00PM
Help those living at The Jewish Board’s Riveredge Residence plant herbs and vegetables in a garden overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
Brooklyn: Borough Park
Arts and Crafting, 1:00-3:00PM
Treat kids to some creative fun when you help host an arts and crafts party at The Jewish Board’s Borough Park Counseling Center.
Brooklyn: Borough Park
Mitzvah Madness Party!, 4:00-6:00PM
Help run a party, complete with DJ, for residents of The Jewish Board’s Mishkon residence for people living with developmental and intellectual challenges.
The Bronx: Riverdale
Olympics in The Bronx!, 12:00-4:00PM
Help lead an Olympics-style event for kids complete with kickball, relays and other games.
Staten Island: Grasmere
Garden Fiesta, 2:00-4:00PM
Help kids plant the herbs and vegetables that will be ingredients for future Mexican dishes cooked up at The Jewish Board’s Geller House residence.
Plant a Flower Garden, 1:00-3:00PM
Plant a flower garden with the young people living at The Jewish Board’s Hawthorne residence.
