The Free 21st Annual Red Hook Fest

Jun 7, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm

| Free

The 21st Annual Red Hook Fest features world-class music, dance, and fun activities for all ages like free kayak rides in New York Harbor (c/o the Red Hook Boaters), face-painting, a Red Hook trivia contest, and more.

This free event takes place on the beautiful Brooklyn waterfront.

This year’s professional artist lineup includes:

The Dance Cartel
“The Dance Cartel brings jubilation and humor back to dance,” according to an enthusiastic headline in the Village Voice. Delivering “haute-performance theory with a house party vibe” (New York Times) while working alongside artists like Yoko Ono (for her “Bad Dancer” music video) and Reggie Watts (multiple collaborations, live and on television), this NYC-based company offers “live performance at its best” (Huffington Post).

Gallim Dance
Gallim Dance is one of the preeminent emerging dance companies in the world, a fact recognized this April by the presentation of a Guggenheim Fellowship to Artistic Director Andrea Miller (“A most original artist-“ Village Voice). With performers “of the highest caliber” (Dance Europe), Gallim Dance’s work has been seen in top-flight venues across the world (BAM, New York City Center, Jacob’s Pillow, Théâtre National de Chaillot, the TANZ Bremen Festival in Germany) and has been hailed as “excellent, inventive, impressive” by the New York Times.

Godsell Dance Collective
As a dancer, Desiree Godsell has been around the world and even made the late-night rounds (Letterman, Conan, Fallon and Colbert). As a choreographer, she brings her own company, Godsell Dance Collective, to the Festival, mixing classic Latin dance forms with an off-kilter pop sensibility honed performing and choreographing for international recording star Santigold.

Dendê & Band
Dendê & Band: Driven by master percussionist Dendê’s polyrhythmic power and joyous melodies, this spirited band (“an expert amalgamation of Afro-Brazilian and Cuban rhythms”- Flavorpill) blends Brazil’s rhythm-heavy music with Afrobeat, reggae, merengue, and other global grooves into an irresistible call to the dance floor. Dendê and Band’s jubilant, upbeat live shows soar with sizzling showmanship.

Underground System
Steeped in influence and inspiration credited to Fela Kuti and the West African pioneered Afrobeat aesthetic, Underground System has carved out a niche that stands uniquely alone as its own. A menagerie of the best kind – part baile funk MCing, part Italian folk song, part Afrobeat anthem – the band has toured the country with their unique 10-piece sound.
