SummerStage: Taana Gardner / DJ Lord Yoda / Hosted by TC Izlam
Jun 18, 2015 @ 7:00 pm| Free
Newark, New Jersey-born Taana Gardner knew she wanted to act and sing at a very young age. After breaking onto the disco scene in 1978, Taana quickly became a leading vocalist for the New York based label West End Records that released some of the finest and most influential disco during the late 70s and early 80s. Gardner has lent her vocal skills and toured with several acts, including Alicia Keys, Jagged Edge, Busta Rhymes, Melba Moore, Kool & the Gang, Peabo Bryson, Edwin Starr, and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.
Yoda joined Zulu Nation and reunited DJ Darryl C and together, with other youth in the Harlem housing complex that they lived in, formed the Crash Crew. After making their name known through park jams, Crash Crew released the classic “High Power Rap” on their own Mike and Dave Records Label. In 1981, the crew signed with Sugarhill Records, released the hit “On the Radio” and began touring throughout the US and Canada. After a few years, DJ Lord Yoda X and Darryl C worked with other rap crews but eventually reunited with Crash Crew in the mid-1990s, with Yoda as the primary DJ. DJ Lord Yoda X has appeared in documentaries including “The Kings of Hip-Hop,” toured the world, and has played for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait with DJ EZ-Rock. He can now be seen and heard weekly on WCHR 90.3 with Bambaataa and Dr. Shaka Zulu, WRNU Radio with DJ Champagne and EZ-Rock, Streetz 106.com, and UStream.tv.
