StoryFest: The Storytelling Festival

StoryFest is a three-day festival that celebrates the best of the New York City comedy storytelling scene; featuring some of the top storytelling shows in the city coming to the PIT Loft. For two years running StoryFest has been bringing you the finest in NYC storytelling
Produced by The Peoples Improv Theater and Harmon Leon (VICE contributor and the man behind the TALE storytelling series), StoryFest spotlights the wide variety themed shows that dots the New York landscape – and trumpets why our city is the number one in the world when it comes to our storytelling scene.
StoryFest features such top shows as Singleling, (Mostly) True Things, The Virgin Chronicles, Pull Up A Chair, TALE, & VHS Presents, and much more…
Plus solo performances by such established NY storytellers as Adam Wade (Inside Amy Schumer), Gastor Almonte (Comedy Central),
Harmon Leon (This American Life), and Joe Charnitski (Moth Grandslam Champ).

7:00: 7pm: Jamie Brickhouse & Joe Charnitski
Moth StorySlam Winnner: Joe Charnitski has given two eulogies in his life. Both were for men named Joe Charnitski. These are their stories. A celebration of fathers and sons, of vagabond shoes, little town blues and swallowing your pride when you do go home again.
Jamie Brickhouse faces his three most defining relationships—booze, sex, and his Texas tornado of a mother Mama Jean—in this darkly comic tour de force.
8:00: TALE: NYC’s Finest Storytelling
No hokey gimmicks. No dumb themes – just the best in NYC’s pro-storytelling!

9:30: (mostly) TRUE THINGS
(mostly) TRUE THINGS is a game wrapped in a storytelling show with a side of music. Four storytellers share true stories, but 3 of them weave little white lies into the telling. The audience gets to ask questions of the storytellers – who are not obligated to tell the truth and can improvise their answers – then vote for the person they think told it straight.

11pm: Dummies and Co
Sean O’Brien and Chris Ryan bring you: Dummies & Company, a simple show, with a simple concept. We invite our funniest friends to shares their funniest stories. That’s it. Plus homemade beef jerky…

4pm: Special Event: StoryFest Storytelling Panel
StoryFest presents a FREE panel on, of course, storytelling. Featuring several of New York’s top storytellers, producers, and storytelling raconteurs.
Wondering how to get into storytelling? What does it take to produce a successful storytelling series? Wanna get some tips on constructing a good tale? How do you create a solo storytelling show?
This FREE panel is for you! Join moderator Harmon Leon (TALE, VideoTALE, Edinburgh Festival) and an experienced panel of storytellers and producers for glimpse into the world of storytelling.

5pm: MTA Storytelling Show
Each performer share a story based on their own personal experience with the MTA. Happy, sad, gross, funny, sexual – you name it.

6pm: Greg DeLucia’s Family Dinner
Family Dinner is a storytelling show that also features pasta cooked by Greg himself. Inspired by all the laughs and stories told at the Sunday family dinners Greg experienced as an Italian kid in New Jersey, the show is at it’s core a storytelling show, usually with one stand-up and some pre-written bits mixed in. A stapled of the show is “Win Greg’s Meatballs” a segment in which contestants have to answer ridiculous questions about Greg in hopes of winning his delicious meatballs.

7:30 pm: The Virgin Chronicles with Evan and Darin
Back for a second year at StoryFest, Comedians Darin Patterson & Evan Morgenstern host the Virgin Chronicles show! A show where comedians, storytellers & writers talk about their “first time” doing something! Anything! From the first job to the first hookup, it’ll definitely be a night of eye-opening stories.

Jake Hart and Nick Padilla bring you ASS: a storytelling show where comedians tell true stories where they are the bad guys. There’s no redemptions, or moments of regret. Just stories of people doing bad things.

VHS Presents is a storytelling show where we travel back to yesterday, when the comedians and storytellers of tomorrow were busy trying to get attention today. In this show some of NYC’s finest performers show the videos they made in their embarrassing youth and tell the stories of their previous self that made that video.

7PM: No Name at Word Up Super Storytellers: Downtown Edition

Hosted by Vanessa Valerio, Singleling is a podcast that showcases love and dating stories from regular people and storytellers around the world, as well as advice from dating experts. The live shows are recorded in different cities and feature storytellers and comedians from each of those cities, therefore each show is different.

Pull Up a Chair’ is a storytelling show that puts the audience at the center of the action.
The action: Four smart, talented and engaging Storytellers interview – and drink with – one smart, generous and thoughtful audience member on a topic of the audience member’s choosing. (An idea they had, a problem they’ve encountered, a great thing they did, a transition they’re going through, or anything they wish to talk about.) This interview inspires each storyteller to spin a true story based on themes and ideas contained therein.

The Peoples Improv Theater strives to entertain and educate the community about the comedic arts in a safe and nurturing environment. The PIT is composed of three elements: a school that focuses on the craft of improvisation, an eclectic variety of electives, and an unparalleled professional writing program; a theater that presents original comedic shows seven nights a week; and a corporate and educational workshop program that offers team building, leadership, and business training.
Harmon Leon (Producer)
Harmon Leon is the author of six books.
His stories have appeared in VICE, Esquire, The Nation, National Geographic, Salon, Huffington Post, NPR’s, This American Life, Details, Maxim, Cracked, SF Chronicle, Playboy, Cosmopolitan, and Wired.
Harmon has performed comedy around the world, including the Edinburgh, Melbourne, Dublin, Vancouver, and Montreal Comedy Festivals. He’s appeared on This American Life, The Howard Stern Show, Last Call With Carson Daly, Penn & Teller’s Bullshit, Spike TV, VH1, FX, as well as the BBC. Harmon also costarred with the infamous OJ Simpson on a hidden camera reality show called Juiced!
He’s produced video content for Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, FX, Daily Mail, Yahoo Sports, National Lampoon, and Current TV.
