Underdonk is pleased to announce Sister Outsider, a show of protest and solidarity, featuring artists working in a range of media, who all belong to communities that have been directly threatened by Donald Trump’s divisive campaign rhetoric, his intended policies, and his preposterous and unconscionable cabinet appointments.
The exhibition borrows its name from poet and activist Audre Lorde’s powerful and apposite compilation of essays and speeches, originally published in 1984. The texts date from 1976-1984, and raise awareness around issues of homophobia, racism, ageism, classism, sexism, and heterosexism. Lorde’s writing varies in tone, moving from anger directed at oppressive systems designed to benefit only the inveterate white male patriarchy, to frustration with the activists around her, fighting “between ourselves over who is the more oppressed, instead of seeing those areas in which our causes are the same.”1 Lorde is ardently hopeful, and writes beautifully about her certainty that oppressed classes can wield enormous power and effect lasting change, but that first we must acknowledge and celebrate—rather than ignore or fear—our many differences.
A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Center for Reproductive Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
