Silvina Ocampo book launch
Jan 29, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm| Free
Community Bookstore is putting on an event to celebrate the release of two new Silvina Ocampo translations—a collection of short stories called Thus Were Their Faces translated by Daniel Balderston (and introduced by Helen Oyeyemi) and a poetry collection translated by Jason Weiss. Ocampo was part of the Borges circle in Buenos Aires, she married the writer Adolfo Bioy Casares and her sister Victoria edited the literary magazine Sur that Borges wrote for, and these are the first translations of her work into English, so we think it’s a major literary event.
The event will be on January 29th at Community Bookstore and will have both translators in conversation with Esther Allen who has won the National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship twice, and Yvette Siegert whose translations of Argentine poet Alejandra Pizarnik is coming out in April from New Directions. Though the conversation will focus on Ocampo I think there’ll be a broader discussion of Argentine literature and translation from Spanish to English.
