Urban Matter Inc. and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will unveil Silent Lights, a new urban art installation of brilliant lights framing a pedestrian pathway at Park Avenue and Navy Street in Brooklyn. Silent Lights is a series of sculptural gates lining a pedestrian pathway under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. The gates are embedded with light and sound equipment: 2,400 LEDs and a microphone, controlled by an arduino mega microcontroller. The installation uses these to respond to sounds from the street and transform it into beautiful light patterns. The light enhances this ordinary often overlooked public right-of-way, creating a playful, inviting, memorable space. It also reflects part of DOT’s efforts to revitalize some of the city’s millions of underutilized square feet of unutilized space under the New York street bridges and expressways.
Silent Lights is a commentary on urban living and unused urban spaces. The primary inspiration for the piece was the sounds of the traffic environment and the potential harnessing it for art. Urban Matter used that to create an experience that provides enhanced lighting for commuters at night and a point of beauty and engagement at all times.
