ROY NEWELL: WORKS FROM THE ARCHIVES

Sotheby’s S|2 gallery is pleased to present Roy Newell: Works from the Archives, one of the first of two shows that are part of the gallery’s re-focused program to celebrate historically important artists who are underappreciated by the market. On view until June 9, 2017, the gallery will showcase eighteen paintings by Abstract artist Roy Newell, spanning over half a century of his career.
An original member of the Abstract Expressionist movement, Newell was featured alongside Willem de Kooning, Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock, but he shied away from the spotlight, preferring to work in the privacy of his New York studio. He reworked compositions over days, weeks, years and decades, resulting in his signature style: brightly-colored geometric abstractions, vacillating between muscular and elegant. A new audience will now have the chance to discover the works of this critically acclaimed pioneer of Abstract artist who went through life relatively undiscovered.
