Roundtable Discussion: Francisco Oller at the Brooklyn Museum p.m. Curator Talk
Dec 12, 2015 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm| $16
1p.m. Curator Talk
Richard Aste, Curator of European Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Edward J. Sullivan, Helen Gould Sheppard Professor of the History of Art, New York University, discuss the exhibition Impressionism and the Caribbean: Francisco Oller and His Transatlantic World.
2 p.m. Artist Roundtable: “Aquí y Allá, Then and Now”
Oller was a beloved and central figure of Puerto Rican art in the nineteenth century, as well as a distinguished transatlantic painter. Against the grain of the European avant-garde, however, Oller forged an iconography of Puerto Rican identity and regional pride, offering a model for the island’s artists. In this roundtable, contemporary Puerto Rican artists and scholars respond to the work of Francisco Oller in regards to the issues of race and cultural identity.
With artists Miguel Luciano, María de Mater O’Neill, Pepón Osorio, and Juan Sanchez, and scholars Erica Moiah James and Yasmin Ramirez. Moderated by Susana Torruella Leval, Director Emerita of El Museo del Barrio.
