CALL OF DUTY (Matt Lenski | NY | 7 min.)
That seemingly inescapable civic purgatory greeted with an enthusiasm reserved for root canals. CALL OF DUTY is a portrait of New York City Jury Duty Clerk Walter Schretzman who has learned how to lull thousands of his fellow grumpy New Yorkers into Jury Duty compliance. He plays the role of Government worker, crisis negotiator, and borscht belt comedian and shares his wisdom with Jurors during their days together. Perhaps Walter’s experience as a Jury Duty Clerk has granted him a deeper understanding of all of our egos, and attitudes. Either way, it is hard to dispute his delightful take on the mundane. Walter Schretzman has been profiled by The New York Times and listed in Time Out Magazine as one of the people that make New York unique. No cameras are allowed in New York Court buildings, yet Call Of Duty was granted access to the jury waiting rooms, for which we are very grateful. Next time you’re at jury duty and don’t think you’re doing much just remember: “You are the only folks standing between civilization and anarchy.” So sit back relax and enjoy the show.
