Rediscovering Antal Szerb’s Italy: A discussion with Julie Orringer and Edwin Frank
Oct 28, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm| Free
Join NYRB Classics, Pushkin Press, and St. Mark’s Bookshop in celebrating the US paperback release of Hungarian writer Antal Szerb’s novel, Journey by Moonlight (NYRB Classics) and the memoir that provided the basis for the book, Szerb’s The Third Tower (Pushkin Press). The Third Tower is a beautiful, slim travelogue following Szerb’s journey through Italy in 1936—a journey overshadowed by the coming war and charged with intense personal nostalgia. Szerb, who was in his mid-thirties at the time, was later deported—in late 1944—to a concentration camp where he died months later. The Third Tower is a rich companion text to Journey by Moonlight, a masterful novel set in Italy, which Szerb wrote following his travels there. It’s equal parts dark comedy, madcap adventure tale, thriller, and romance, and the book is considered by many to be Szerb’s masterpiece and a classic of twentieth-century literature.
Novelist Julie Orringer and NYRB Classics editorial director, Edwin Frank, will discuss the novel and the memoir as well as Antal Szerb’s prolific career and tragically short life.
