Patterned Stationery Workshop With Greenpoint Hand Skills & BiblioCraft
Mar 1, 2014 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
You’re just our type! For March’s workshop, you’ll learn how to carve a stamp inspired by and print your own set of patterned stationery drawing inspiration from type specimen books, with help from Jessica Pigza and Julie Schneider.
Type specimen books functioned like catalogs in centuries past, allowing letterpress type foundries to advertise the variety of styles, different alphabets, and other type ornaments available. Looking at historical type specimen books today opens a window into letter designs common at a particular place and time, and they offer plenty of design inspiration as well. In this session, you’ll learn how to use letterforms from a century ago in unexpected and even abstract ways as you design and create one-of-a-kind colorfully patterned stationery.
This project designed by Greenpoint Hand Skills’ host Julie Schneider is one of 20+ projects found in the new craft book, Bibliocraft: A Modern Crafter’s Guide to Using the Library to Jumpstart Creative Projects by Jessica Pigza. Jessica is a Greenpointer, New York Public Library’s rare books librarian, and host of Handmade Crafternoon.
