Obsolete Cinema presents Shameless Cash-In!!
Aug 24, 2014 @ 2:30 pm - 6:30 pm| Free
It’s the dog days of summer, and the sewers are lousy with kickass turtles and Italian plumbers. This month, our Summer Blockbuster Smackdown goes underground with two ’90s franchise cash-ins shown on living VHS: ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie’ and ‘Super Mario Bros.’
Move over, Michael Bay! We’ve got the original heroes on a half shell — well, sort of. Before there were reboots, there were adaptations, and 1990’s TMNT was third generation — adapted from a popular cartoon already adapted from the Eastman-Laird comic book. But Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are still saving New York by kicking ass and cracking wise, with supporting humans Judith Hoag and Elias Koteas and puppetry by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. And hey, is that Corey Feldman’s voice? Cowabunga!
Then, power up for a video game blockbuster of disastrous proportions! With a production as troubled as Nintendo’s current business model, ‘Super Mario Bros.’ (1993) finds the beloved Italian caricatures Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi (John Leguizamo) duking it out with King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) for the honor of Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis). Brooklyn stereotypes abound, and any loyalty to the actual game is flushed in exchange for some big movie spectacle. But Mojo Nixon, Fisher Stevens, Richard Edson, and Lance Henrisken are there too? Pass the mushrooms!
Embrace the analog at Freddy’s, with trivia, prizes and Happy Hour specials to cash in on!
