MONUMENTAL DESIGN: LETTERING IN GREEN-WOOD
Sep 14, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm| $30
Over 560,000 people are buried at Green-Wood, and the plentiful individual monuments and markers each tell a unique story, often told through the names, dates, and quotes literally etched in stone. Join Paul Shaw, lettering expert, calligrapher, author, designer and design historian, for a look at the varied lettering design to be found among Green-Wood’s myriad tombs, mausoleums, monuments and more. Shaw, who teaches calligraphy and typography courses at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts and has led lettering tours across the globe, will show how lettering styles and layouts have evolved, from the early days of Green-Wood in the 1840s through the 20th century. He will also discuss how printing, posters, pneumatic tools and trends in materials influenced lettering in America – even in cemeteries. At the end of the walking tour, participants will take home a unique stone rubbing made during the tour.
$30; $25 for members of the Green-Wood Historic Fund and members of the Brooklyn Historical Society. Reservations are recommended. To make an online reservation or to find out more information, call 718-210-3080 or visit www.green-wood.com/toursevents.
