Manhattanville Reading Series 6

The sixth edition of the Manhattanville Reading Series, a monthly Crown Heights-based showcase for emerging writers held at popular local cafe Manhattanville Coffee, features 2015 National Book Award finalist Angela Flournoy (The Turner House) and three up-and-coming stars: Nick Mancusi, who has published criticism in many prominent places, including the NY Times Book Review, the Washington Post, and NPR Books; Lena Valencia, a former editor at influential Brooklyn lit journal A Public Space who has written for BOMB; and Anika Lani, whose work has appeared in Columbia Journal. Admission is free, and mingling encouraged.

ANGELA FLOURNOY is the author of The Turner House, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and a New York Times Notable Book of 2015. The novel was also a finalist for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, the NYPL Young Lions Fiction Award, and an NAACP Image Award. She is a National Book Foundation “5 Under 35″ honoree for 2015. Her fiction has appeared in The Paris Review, and she has written for The New York Times, The New Republic, The Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California. She has taught at the University of Iowa, The New School and Columbia University.

NICK MANCUSI has been published in the New York Times Book Review, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, NPR Books, Newsday, Newsweek, Time Out New York, American Arts Quarterly, Fine Arts Connoisseur, The Daily Beast, and many other places. He is working on his first novel.

LENA VALENCIA is a Brooklyn-based writer and a host of the HiFi Reading Series in Manhattan. Her writing has appeared in BOMB Magazine, The Masters Review, StoryChord, and elsewhere. She received her MFA in Fiction from The New School.

ANIKA LANI attended Hunter College and Wesleyan University’s continuing studies writing program. Her work has been published in Columbia Journal. Find more of her writing at mshoneyology.tumblr.com.
