Maker Marks / New Mistress vs. Old Athenians
Sep 11, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm| Free
Brooklyn Fire Proof and BFP Creative are pleased to present two new exhibitions, which will open concurrently in Temporary Storage gallery’s adjacent spaces. Maker Marks and New Mistress vs. Old Athenians will run from September 8th to October 9th, 2015, with an opening reception on Friday, September 11th.
New Mistress vs. Old Athenians (small gallery, 104) is a solo show of new work by Atlanta-based artist Craig Drennen. Since 2008, Drennen has based his studio practice around Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens, a play considered Shakespeare’s most problematic work. For each character in the play, he produces a distinct body of work based on contemporary associations, resulting in a collection of related pieces composed of separately considered parts. Drennen previously showed with Brooklyn Fire Proof in 2005, at its former location in Williamsburg. Further information here: http://www.bfpcreative.com/new-mistress-vs-old-athenians/
Maker Marks (large gallery, 105), curated by artists Alex Gingrow and Michael Scoggins, is about the transcendent nature of the obsessive, repetitive mark as process. In a culture where time is increasingly of the essence, the artists in this exhibition cultivate the passage of time as both a medium and a discipline. The show includes work by Man Bartlett, Ghost of a Dream, Shanti Grumbine, Jessie Henson, Delanie Jenkins, Lindsey Landfried, David X. Levine, Joe Nanashe and Amanda Tiller.
