Los Sures Screening at TGC Williamsburg

Jun 18, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Los Sures Film Screening
Saturday, June 18, 7pm
231 Ainslie St, 11211
In an effort to honor North Brooklyn’s rich history, on SaturdayJune 18 at 7pm, we will have a screening of the film Los Sures, followed by panel of longtime residents to share more of our neighborhood’s story from their perspective.

The film is best described at http://www.uniondocs.org/living-los-sures/:

“In the early 80s, Los Sures (South Williamsburg) was one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. In fact, it had been called the worst ghetto in America. Shot in 1984, Diego Echeverria’s film skillfully represents the many challenges this place faced: drugs, gang violence, crime, abandoned real estate, racial tension, single-parent homes, and inadequate local resources. At the same time, the documentary also celebrates the vitality of this largely Puerto Rican and Dominican community, showing the strength of their culture, their creativity, and their determination to overcome a sometimes desperate situation. Beautifully restored just in time for the 30th anniversary of its original premiere at the New York Film Festival, Los Sures is a piece of New York City history we must not forget.”

Please join us as we celebrate the story of our neighborhood.
