LoftOpera Presents Rossini’s Otello
March 16 @ 8:00 pm
LoftOpera’s 2017 season opens with six performances of Rossini’s rarely performed Otello at LightSpace Studios in Bushwick — an intimate working photography studio — on March 16, 18, 20, 23, 25 and 27 at 8:00 p.m. This production marks the first fully staged production of Rossini’s Otello in the New York City area in over forty years. LoftOpera is also the first New York City based company to produce a fully staged new production of this work.
Tenor Bernard Holcomb is featured in the title role together with soprano Cecilia Violetta López as Desdemona, tenor Thor Arbjornsson as Rodrigo, tenor Blake Friedman as Iago, bass-baritone Isaiah Musik-Ayala as Elmiro, mezzo-soprano Toby Newman as Emilia, tenor John Ramseyer as Lucio/Gondolier, and tenor Lucas Levy as Doge, joined by a 27-piece orchestra and a ten member chorus.
Rossini’s tragedy is conducted by bel canto specialist Sean Kelly and directed by John de los Santos, is set during Italy’s mid-twentieth century “Economic Miracle” era, and puts conflicts of nationalistic bigotry and political sabotage at its forefront. Scenic design is by Michael Zaragoza of DDG Partners, one of the most active developers in New York; lighting design is by Joel Fitzpatrick; and costume design is by Shawna Ferguson with pieces by season sponsor JackThreads.
General admission tickets for Otello with bench seating are $30 and are available by visiting www.loftopera.com. Memberships and reserved seating options are also available.
