Lectures on the Urban Landscape | Marie Lorenz
Oct 23, 2013 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm| Free
As part of their project “Street Signs Became Flags that Mark Mountaintops,” part of the “Houswarming” exhibition, and its interest in field research and discovery, Katarina Jerinic and Chad Stayrook have curated a lecture series, inviting other artists to present on their work that explores the urban landscape through methods more commonly used to study the natural world.
“The Tide and Current Taxi”
Marie Lorenz will discuss her ongoing project The Tide and Current Taxi, in which she ferries people throughout New York City in a rowboat that she designed and built. She studies tidal charts of the harbor and uses the current to propel the boat. Floating through the city profoundly changes one’s perspective and lends itself to observations and awareness that create something new out of something familiar. After each trip, Lorenz creates an online photo journal, telling stories of these navigations and giving readers a transformative, floating experience while they navigate the web. By continually examining the waterfront of New York City, her project explores and records the perpetual transformation of the coast.
