Kevin Powell presents The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey Into Manhood, in conversation with Ted Hamm

Nov 4, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

| Free
Powell, Kevin

Brooklyn author and activist Kevin Powell is the author or editor of eleven previous books and the cofounder of BK Nation, an organization focused on civil rights, education, and equal opportunity. But before his books, his journalism career, and two well-received runs for Congress, Powell struggled with horrific poverty, homelessness, and a legacy of anger, violence, and self-hatred. His memoir The Education of Kevin Powell, praised by Eve Ensler and bell hooks, among others, recounts Powell’s struggle to become a man and a voice for others, as well as the fascinating story of his professional career. From appearing on the first season of MTV’s The Real Worldand interviewing Tupac Shakur for Vibe, to the uplifting trip to Africa that renewed his sense of personal mission, Powell’s story is a striking memoir by a child of post-Civil Rights America, and an eloquent testimony to the power of the soul to heal. Powell discusses his book and his story with Ted Hamm, head of the journalism department at St. Joseph’s College and founder of The Brooklyn Rail.
