Aug 17, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm| $40
COMING TO BROOKLYN
JEAN AND DINAH . . . the play
by Tony Hall & Lordstreet Theatre Company
Jean and Dinah was written and directed by Tony Hall. It orchestrates itself out of the calypso “Yankees Gone” aka JEAN & DINAH, the song, which brought the Mighty Sparrow to the pinnacle of the calypso world in 1956.
Jean and Dinah starring Rhoma Spencer as Dinah and Penelope Spencer as Jean, featuring master percussionist Tamba Gwindi, is a tragi-comedy set in 1990’s Port-of Spain, Trinidad. It then takes us some 40 years back to the theatre of the streets of Port of Spain when Jean & Dinah ruled the town. It is Jouvay morning, the dawn of Carnival Monday and Jean comes to take her friend, Dinah, to play mas in the city as they have done for the over 40 years. In the ensuing battle to get Dinah out of bed and onto the streets, both women discover things about themselves that shaped their lives. This play gives the women in Sparrow’s calypso a voice. Sponsored by Superwings, their stories take us on an emotional roller coaster of laughter, pain and sorrow.
The play opened on stage in Port of Spain, Trinidad on November 29th, 1994 to rave reviews. That year the production copped Five Cacique Awards: for Best Play, Best Director, Best Music, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
Since that time the play has been performed successfully across the West Indies (Guyana, St. Lucia, Jamaica). Regarded by Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott as “ . . . one of the finest pieces of West Indian theatre I have seen in years . . . ”, JEAN & DINAH . . . was first performed in the United States (Hartford, CT, Hamilton, NY, and New York, NY.) in 1998; in Toronto, Ontario in 2001 & 2002; in Scarborough, Ontario and Edmonton, Alberta in 2005; in Birmingham, Leicester, London, UK in 2003 and in Curacao, Netherland Antilles in 2010.
