In the urban decay of the early 1970’s, between abandoned buildings and vacant lots, small green oases started to blossom in the East Village and Lower East Side. Developed and maintained by the people, these community gardens are intrinsically linked to the history of local grassroots activism. But even though they have become a symbol and an essential feature of the neighborhood, their existence can still be threatened. Deeply anchored yet fragile spaces, the gardens are the heritage and the future of social and political fights.

The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space’s new exhibition takes you on a journey through the Community Garden District of New York City!

5 PM: Opening of the exhibition
6 PM: Discussion with gardens members and advocates
8 PM: Food and beverages

Location: Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS)
155 Avenue C (between 9th and 10th Street)
