Green-Wood will host its 17th annual Memorial Day event on Monday, May 25, 2015. This year’s Memorial Day commemoration caps off a full weekend of programs at Green-Wood marking the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, including a night event on Saturday, May 23rd, during which 5,000 luminaries will be installed at the graves of Civil War soldiers and others who played a role in the War.

The Memorial Day commemoration begins with an honor march as reenactors and musicians lead a procession to Green-Wood’s Civil War Soldiers’ Lot for remarks and a commemorative program honoring the soldiers interred there, including a recitation of their names by descendants and an artillery salute. Relatives of Civil War veterans interred at Green-Wood will be on hand.

Beginning at 2:30p.m., visitors are invited to bring blankets and relax among Green-Wood’s rolling hills to enjoy the popular concert by the ISO Symphonic Band- a wind, brass and percussion ensemble comprising some of the most talented student musicians in the New York metro area, led by its founder and conductor Brian P. Worsdale. A special guest conductor, Dozier Hasty, the publisher of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, will take the baton for one of band’s selections. The music of some of Green-Wood’s most notable residents will be featured, including Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Leonard Bernstein, and others. Local vendors will offer food and beverages for purchase throughout the day.

Directly after the concert, enjoy a special Memorial Day trolley tour with Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman featuring some of the Cemetery’s highlights and veteran connections. (Space is limited. Advance ticket purchase required.)

Also on view throughout the day will be Green-Wood’s newest exhibition, To Bid You All Good Bye: Civil War Stories. The exhibition in the Historic Chapel, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, will use historic artifacts, photos, primary documents, and more to share the stories of the men and women, interred at Green-Wood, who took part in the Civil War. To Bid You All Good Bye: Civil War Stories was developed in collaboration with Brooklyn Historical Society as part of a joint programming initiative commemorating the 150th anniversary of the war’s end through exhibitions, educational curricula, and public programming. Visit Brooklyn Historical Society’s exhibition, Personal Correspondents, on display from April 9, 2015 to March 2016.
