GREEN-WOOD CELEBRATES A BIG ANNIVERSARY FOR NYC: ITS PIONEERINGLANDMARKS PROTECTION LAW TURNS 50

Visit Green-Wood’s Own Landmarks and

Meet Green-Wood Residents Whose Work was Saved By the Law

WHAT:                      Calling all lovers of architecture, history and great landmarks of New York City: join Green-Wood in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Landmarks Law. It was 1965 when Mayor Wagner signed this revolutionary bill into law, which continues today to protect and preserve the city’s most iconic and beloved sites.

With architectural historian and tour guide Matt Postal, visitors will see Green-Wood’s own designated landmark: Richard Upjohn and Son’s magnificent gothic archway (celebrating its 150th birthday this year), as well as several sites with landmark connections – like Green-Wood’s historic Chapel (1911) by the architects of Grand Central Terminal – a structure famously saved in the 1970s when the Landmarks Law was challenged (and upheld) in the US Supreme Court; the graves of many architects of NYC Landmarks, including Gamaliel King (Brooklyn Borough Hall), James Renwick (St. Patrick’s Cathedral), and James McComb (Gracie Mansion, City Hall); and more.

This program is part of NYC Landmarks50 Alliance, the multi-year celebration of the 50th anniversary of New York City’s Landmarks Law.
