Free Author Talk About Brooklyn’s Forgotten History

Dec 17, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

| Free
On December 17th at 7:30 pm, come to a free event at the Park Slope branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (431 6th Avenue at 9th Street, near the 7th Ave F/G). It’s the latest installment of the interview series BOOKISH: Writers Talking, where novelist Amy Shearn (author of THE MERMAID OF BROOKLYN) will be interviewing historian Judith Wellman about her fascinating book BROOKLYN’S PROMISED LAND: THE FREE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY OF WEEKSVILLE, NEW YORK.
This is one of the first comprehensive studies of Weeksville, a genteel agrarian community founded by free African-American land-owners before the Civil War, in what is now Crown Heights. Brooklyn history buffs will find this talk — and Wellman’s book — indispensable.
The event is free and open to the public!
