Nearly a century ago, James Whale directed his two masterpieces starring Boris Karloff: Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein, and they remain terrifying to this day.

In this class, we’ll explore the history of Frankenstein, looking at a few key questions along the way. How does a Depression-era film still compete with modern horror movies? Are different body parts sewn together and reanimated really that scary? Or is there something more to Whale’s Monster who continues to fascinate people?

Old fans and people unfamiliar with the films are welcome to this lecture that discusses the films’ history going back to Mary Shelly’s original novel and beyond while ultimately answering the question: What makes James Whale and Boris Karloff’s Monster so frightening?
