Ewan McGregor to speak at Candlelight Vigil to Urge World Leaders to Put Children First Ahead of the UN Refugees Summit

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2016

What:   A gathering of civil society organizations, faith groups, state representatives, UN agencies, business leaders and young people from refugee and migrant communities to shine a light on the plight of the estimated 50 million children who have been uprooted from their homes by conflict, violence, poverty, extreme weather and drought.

On the eve of the United Nations’ first ever summit on refugees and migrants, and with generous support from Alkhayyat Foundation, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Children’s Defense Fund- New York, UNICEF and others are bringing the community together to remind world leaders to put #ChildrenFirst as they address the largest humanitarian crisis of displacement since World War II.

Why:    With an entire generation in danger of losing their childhoods, the vigil will highlight the large and vocal global             constituency standing for the world’s children and demanding that consideration of their rights and needs be a             priority. Though many things divide nations and peoples, most can agree that children are innocent and deserve             the opportunity to grow to their full potential. Though called by many names – refugees, migrants, stateless,            internally displaced – they are children first.

Who:    The program will feature first person accounts from refugee and migrant children about their experiences as well as remarks from leaders who advocate on behalf of children affected by the crisis.

Speakers include:

Caryl M. Stern, President & CEO, U.S. Fund for UNICEF

Justin Forsyth, Deputy Executive Director, UNICEF

Ewan McGregor, UNICEF Ambassador and Actor

Natasha Esther Maimba & Minahil Sarfraz, children who fled their respective homes of Zimbabwe and Pakistan
