Drugs and Religious Experience: Shortcut or Necessity?

 

  • We will explore the value of and issues with using mind altering substances to experience non-ordinary states of reality.
  • How do we use what we ingest to change the way we see the world.
  • Michael Haltenberger teaches comparative religion at Hunter college. He is particularly interested in the connection between religion and science.

 

Our first task will be to define what we mean by mind-altering substances. Does caffeine count? Alcohol? Sugar? Can we draw a line between eating for sustenance and for the buzz it gives us? Are extreme diets just another way to get high? These are just some of the questions to spur our discussion.
