DESIGN CODIFIED: THE GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL
Dec 2, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm| $10/Free for Members & MTA Employees
In 1967 the New York City Transit Authority hired Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda (of Unimark International) to design a signage and wayfinding system – the Graphic Standards Manual. Today, the Manual is one of the world’s foremost examples of modern design and its limited-edition re-issue spawned the viral success of an $800,000 Kickstarter project. Join Pentagram designers Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed for a conversation about the standards of historic and contemporary design, as we celebrate the re-release of the New York City Transit Authority Graphic Standards Manual Compact Edition.
Then, take a tour of the Museum’s permanent collection of wayfinding signs dating back to the Subway’s earliest beginning, and learn about the creative process. Original and newly re-issued Graphic Standards Manuals will be on view and new editions will be available for purchase in the Museum Store.
