DEREK & THE BLACK SEA / PONYBOY & THE SHINERS / THE PSYCHEDELICATESSEN
Nov 23, 2013 @ 9:00 pm| $8
Derrick & The Black Sea are a stripped down dark folk group from Brooklyn who shine a light into broken hearts and translate the pain into songs about hope.
Ponyboy & The Shiners
Lead by vocalist/guitarist Keith “Pony” Stapleton, formerly of The Fever (Kemado Records), Ponyboy and the Shiners fuse elements of the last 50 years of music into their own style of rock n roll. The boys are equally at home among fans of 70’s album-oriented- rock as they are with those seeking modern flavors. The diversity of their sound can be attributed to the eclectic mix of musicians that make up the shiners. Drummer Kevin Hudson is a veteran of the NYC rockabilly scene while Michael Rafalowich and Matt Shapiro, bass & keys respectively, draw from their encyclopedic knowledge of rock and soul from the 60s & 70’s. Finally, baritone saxophonist, Jay McMahon spent his formative years blowing bebop standards around the world in various ensembles. The band formed in 2013 and is currently preparing to record its debut ep.
The Psychedelicatessen is a 60’s and 70’s inspired psychedelic, improvisational rock experience with a flute twist. The sets are often eclectic with moments of classical and jazz emerging from the sea of psychedelia. The members of the band consider themselves to be musical chefs of sorts preparing, cooking, and serving their audiences delicious auditory appetizers, ear entrancing entrees, sonic side dishes, and deep decadent dancing desserts. Beverages provided by venue.
Master Chef Larry Meyer is a virtuoso guitarist and composer who is a protege of the legendary jazz pianist Lennie Tristano who performed with Charlie Parker. His dazzling guitar playing will mesMEYERize you. Sous-chef Govinda Willard is a vocalist and flutist who has performed on stage with many jam legends including Trey Anastasio and Mike Gorden of Phish, Les Claypool of Primus, Michael Frante, Moe, Karl Denson, and The Disco Biscuits. She has found a home in The Psychedelicatessen. Chef de partie Dan WIllard is a drummer with roots in funk, rock, and jazz who is just as likely to be cooking up beats in odd time signatures as sauteeing grooves with various layers of percussive sounds.
The Psychedelicatessen endeavors to elevate it’s audience to states of rapture and bliss through each performance. Come in for a tasting.
