Derby Day, at Pete’s Candy Store!
May 3, 2014 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm| Free
Brothers! Sisters! The flowers and trees are in bloom, and the whole world is in heat. Maia once more has pulled us to her ample bosom, as the haggard face of winter grows pale and specter-thin, and dies. Spring is here, and with it comes that most ennobling spectacle of the first Saturday in May.
Yes, friends: IT’S KENTUCKY DERBY DAY!, where we rejoice as the lusty colts—and the occasional activated filly—run for the roses! So won’t you come join us at PETE’S CANDY STORE for our 157th Annual Kentucky Derby Festivities? In the finest Knickerbocker tradition, our Derby Day festivities have endured Gotham’s rises and falls, diverting generations among the marbl’d halls of BillyBurg. The amusements are diverse as a woman’s lies, and include:
* The Ladies Millinery Competition, in which ?nely be-hatted women compete for the reward of a Bar Tab, as determined by our public decree.
* The ever popular Bluegrass Blue-Plate Special, featuring home-made Bourbon Glazed Ribs, Louisville Potato Salad, and Derby Pie (with whipped cream), for civilized price!
*Pete’s Paddock, a diversionary corral of horse-sense, to enlighten the wagering classes
*The Hooker’s Handicapp, an ode to your host’s narcissism, overpriced at $1.
*The Idiot Stakes, in which even a loser becomes a winner.
** …and, of course, Parimutuel Distractions, to take our minds o? the moribund folly of this human condition, if only for a few moments.
The festivities get underway SATURDAY, MAY 3 at 3pm at PETE’S CANDY STORE (709 Lorimer St., Brooklyn, 11211), and will last until the last horse crosses the finish line!
