Concert Reading : The Trials of Patricia Isasa An Opera in Two Acts by Kristin Norderval and Naomi Wallace

Jan 13, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Chants Libres, a Montreal lyric creation company, along with composer Kristin Norderval are pleased to present an exclusive concert reading of the new opera The Trials of Patricia Isasa. The evening marks the first full musical reading of this new creation featuring soloists from Chants Libres, a chorus, and the Binelli-Ferman tango ensemble and guests, led by Argentine conductor Cristian Gort.

Composed by Kristin Norderval along with librettist Naomi Wallace and director Pauline Vaillancourt, the founder of Chants Libres, The Trials of Patricia Isasa is based on the life story of the Argentine architect and human rights activist Patricia Isasa. Abducted, imprisoned, and tortured at age 16, Isasa was one of the 30,000 citizens who “disappeared” at the hands of the military junta that ruled Argentina in the late 1970s. More than 30 years after her abduction, Isasa managed to identity and bring justice to her tormentors – among them, a chief of police, a graduate of the US Military’s School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia, a federal judge, and the mayor of Patricia’s hometown. Based on personal conversations held with Patricia Isasa in 2011, the opera raises question about the amnesty given to highly placed people in government, the use of torture for political reasons, and the need to act with urgency to achieve accountability. The program will last two hours with no intermission.
